Our installation team recently completed the supply and fitting of two Phoenix Osprey insulated steel folding door sets for an industrial site.
The client required large, secure access doors that could be operated manually while also providing good thermal performance and safe pedestrian access. The Phoenix Osprey folding door system provided a practical solution for the size and configuration of the openings.
Both door sets are externally mounted and use a top-hung sliding folding system.
Each door has a 3:3 configuration, with three leaves hinged from either side of the opening. When opened, the leaves fold back towards the jambs to provide a maximum clear opening of approximately 5.4 metres.
The doors run from a hot galvanised steel channel top track using sealed-bearing guide wheels. This provides smooth manual operation while keeping the main operating mechanism above the opening.
Folding doors are particularly useful for larger industrial openings where good access is required without the overhead arrangement associated with some sectional door systems. Cooks Doors supplies both manual and automated folding doors to suit different buildings and applications.
Each Phoenix Osprey door leaf is constructed from a cold-rolled galvanised steel frame, with additional reinforcement around the door hardware.
The frame is clad on both sides with galvanised steel sheets and pressure injected with CFC-free polyurethane foam, producing an insulated panel approximately 55mm thick.
The panels have a stated U-value of 1.53 W/m²K, helping to reduce heat transfer through the door opening. Flexible rubber seals are also fitted around the door edges and between individual leaves to help reduce draughts and provide protection against the weather.
For this installation, the exterior was finished in Mushroom Plastisol, chosen to work with the existing building cladding, while the inside of the doors has a clean white Plastisol finish.
Black aluminium Apex hinges and matching hardware provide a contrasting finish to the door panels.

With any large manually operated folding door, safety is an important part of the specification.
The Phoenix Osprey system incorporates full finger-trap safeguarding between the door leaves. The doors also comply with BS EN 13241-1:2003 and meet the required standards for manual and operating forces.
Top and bottom espagnolette shoot bolts are operated using internal lever handles, helping to provide a secure closure while keeping everyday operation straightforward for staff.
One of the door sets also incorporates an emergency escape wicket door within the leading leaf.
This allows pedestrian access without opening the complete folding door and provides a dedicated emergency exit from the building.
The outward-opening wicket door is fitted with a Briton 379 panic bar, together with an external override cylinder and finger latch. Stainless steel butt hinges and a concealed overhead door limiting stay complete the installation.
Incorporating the wicket door into the main folding system means the client retains the full functionality of the large folding door while meeting the requirement for convenient emergency escape access.
The correct industrial door will depend on the building, opening size, available space and how the entrance needs to be used.
Our team can survey your premises and advise on the most suitable option, whether that is a folding door, sectional door, roller shutter or sliding door. We can then manage the installation using our own experienced engineers and provide ongoing servicing, maintenance and repairs where required.
