Fire Door Safety Week

Posted on 25/09/2017

This week is Fire Door Safety Week – a national campaign to educate and engage people about the importance of well-looked-after fire doors. We’re getting involved to help spread the word and make sure our customers know the proper way to check their doors and stay safe.

Fire Doors Save Lives

In the event of a fire, a fire door is the first line of defence. It will contain fire and smoke for a defined period – slowing their spread and making the fire easier to tackle. This also gives people time to escape. Fire doors are rigorously tested to extreme temperatures and are designed for a specific purpose. They must be kept closed or they won’t work so, if you see a door wedged open, kick it away!

Responsibility

Under the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005 (FSO), all public buildings have a designated ‘responsible person’ who ensures fire risk assessments have been carried out, and has a legal responsibility to fulfil their duties. One of those duties is to check the state of fire doors. This is given specific mention in the FSO. Most workplaces will have a health and safety officer who will also be the designated responsible person. In private rented or social housing, the landlord is responsible. Poor installation or maintenance will make fire doors ineffective, so regular checks are necessary to ensure safety.

If you have any worries about fire doors in your workplace or building, you can find advice on the official Fire Door Safety Week website. We supply, install and maintain fire doors, exits, shutters and curtains – get in touch if you need help deciding which is right for you. Call 0800 0180304 or email sales@cooksdoors.co.uk.
