The Return of Grand Designs

Posted on 21/10/2016

Grand Designs, the show where Kevin McCloud watches in amazement as people attempt to build their dream homes, has clocked up an astonishing 148 episodes since it first aired in 1999. The show has featured some crazily ambitious constructions and regularly pulls in upwards of 3 million viewers anxious to see whether the outrageous projects will be completed at all (never mind on time and under budget).

The Secret to the Show’s Popularity

Not many television shows can run for nearly twenty years and maintain the interest of the viewing public. The great thing about Grand Designs is that the armchair architect can watch with a mixture of awe (“I wish I could afford to do that!”) and amazement (“I would never do it that way!”). The spectacular successes from the show far outnumber the spectacular failures, but clever editing can keep you guessing which way the project is going to end up.

The Curse of Grand Designs

Some tabloids have claimed there is a curse of Grand Designs, citing buildings that have appeared on the show that sell for less than they cost to build. In one memorable case, a houseboat built from a Thames barge washed up as scrap metal on the shores of the river. Presenter Kevin McCloud never likes to discuss the profit motive in house building. He claimed in an interview with the Guardian in 2010 that houses should be built to enrich people’s lives, not their wallets.
